Three Peaks challenges in United States
The United States spans western mountain systems, central plains and eastern uplands, with Alaska and Hawaii adding separate landscapes. State-level journeys make this immense variety easier to explore region by region.
The landscapes of United States
The contiguous United States places western mountain systems on one side of broad central plains, with older uplands towards the east. Alaska adds rugged ranges and expansive river valleys, while Hawaii contributes a separate volcanic island setting in the Pacific. These are fundamentally different mountain landscapes.
Climate varies from Arctic conditions in Alaska to tropical environments in Hawaii and southern Florida, with arid and semiarid regions in the west. State-level destinations provide a useful way to explore this diversity, locating each group of mountains within its own regional geography rather than a single national pattern.
