Discover Illinois

Northwestern Illinois has a rolling upland character that differs markedly from the state's broad central plains. Charles Mound, Horseshoe Mound and Scales Mound sit in the Galena and Jo Daviess County landscape, making this a geographically focused selection of named hills rather than an attempt to create an alpine challenge.

The appeal lies in open rural horizons, wooded slopes and the shape of the country around historic Galena. Charles Mound supplies the state highpoint connection, while the other mounds keep the enquiry rooted in the same corner of Illinois. These are individual landscape destinations, and their inclusion does not imply identical access arrangements or a continuous public walking route between them.
