Discover North Dakota
Western North Dakota's buttes rise above open prairie and Badlands country, giving the landscape a distinctive skyline without an alpine mountain range. White Butte, Sentinel Butte and Black Butte are individual landmarks within that western setting. Their appeal lies in the contrast between isolated high ground and the broad country around it.
White Butte is the state highpoint near Amidon, and Black Butte adds another southwestern landmark in the same broad part of the state. Sentinel Butte adds another part of the western landscape to the enquiry. This creates a geographically understandable regional grouping while leaving the actual arrangement of visits, land access and the right overall pace to be established for the trip.
