Discover South Dakota
South Dakota's Black Hills provide a distinctive island of mountain country within the surrounding plains. Black Elk Peak, Bear Butte and Crow Peak draw together different parts of that landscape, from the central granite hills to northern and eastern landmarks. This is a regional selection rather than three summits along one ridge.
Black Elk Peak anchors the central high country, Crow Peak belongs to the Spearfish side of the northern hills, and Bear Butte stands apart to the northeast. That separation is part of the appeal: wooded mountains, isolated landforms and open plains appear in different combinations. An enquiry should respect the individual character of each place, including Bear Butte's cultural significance, rather than treating the names as interchangeable targets.
