Three Peaks challenges in Paraguay
Paraguay is divided by its namesake river between eastern hills and the broad Gran Chaco. Its uplands offer modest relief compared with the Andes, within a landscape shaped by plains, woodland and river systems.
The landscapes of Paraguay
The Paraguay River divides two contrasting landscapes. To the east are grassy plains and wooded hills; to the west, the Gran Chaco includes low marshy ground near the river and drier forest and thorn scrub farther inland. The country's relief is generally modest compared with the Andes.
Rainfall also changes across this inland part of South America. Eastern Paraguay receives substantially more rain, while the far west becomes semiarid. Its upland landmarks belong to this broader setting of rivers, plains and woodland, rather than a continuous high mountain system.
