Three Peaks challenges in Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea's rugged mountains occupy much of the main island's interior. Coastal lowlands and rolling foothills create a marked transition toward the higher country, including the central highland region.
The landscapes of Papua New Guinea
Much of Papua New Guinea's main island rises from coastal lowlands through rolling foothills into a rugged mountainous interior. The highland country is a substantial geographical region in its own right, separated from the shoreline by marked changes in relief rather than a single coastal ridge.
The country lies in the tropical southwestern Pacific, north of Australia. Seasonal winds bring contrasting monsoon influences, while temperatures at a given elevation change relatively little through the year. The higher interior and lower coastal belt therefore provide distinctly different settings within the same tropical latitude.
