The landscapes of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia brings together high islands and low coral atolls across four widely separated Pacific island groups. A mountain landscape on Pohnpei or Kosrae belongs to a very different setting from the low-lying islands elsewhere in the country.

Pohnpei and Kosrae are high volcanic islands with mountainous interiors. Chuuk includes high islands within a lagoon setting, while Yap presents another island landscape farther west. Low atolls occur elsewhere across the federation. The distinction between high island and coral atoll matters more here than any attempt to describe one national mountain system.
