Three Peaks challenges in Ukraine
Ukraine's broad plains and plateaus rise toward the Carpathians in the west. This western mountain landscape is geographically distinct from most of the country, with higher rainfall and more pronounced relief.
The landscapes of Ukraine
Ukraine's broad steppes and plateaus contrast with the Carpathian mountain country in the west. The southern Crimean Peninsula also contains mountainous terrain, but the western ranges form a separate geographical setting from both that peninsula and the more extensive interior plains.
Rainfall is generally greater in the west and north than in the east and southeast. Continental influences dominate much of the climate, with differences between inland and coastal areas. The western uplands consequently combine more pronounced relief with a different regional setting from most of Ukraine's lowland landscapes.
