The selected mountains belong to western Ukraine's higher country, contrasting with the broad plains and plateaus farther east. Their setting forms part of the wider Carpathian landscape, where relief is more pronounced than across most of the national territory.
These locations occupy the western end of Ukraine's Carpathian country, near the adjoining mountain regions of Poland and Slovakia. Ridges and enclosed valleys form the regional landscape. They are separate from the higher Chornohora massif farther southeast, showing that western Ukraine's uplands include several distinct mountain areas rather than one summit group.
