Three Peaks challenges in Serbia
Serbia moves from northern plains toward limestone ranges, basins and older mountain country in the south. Its upland regions provide a marked contrast to the flatter landscapes around the Danube basin.
The landscapes of Serbia
Northern Serbia's plains contrast with limestone ranges and basins in the east and older mountain and hill country towards the southeast. The transition from the Danube basin to the southern uplands gives the country several distinct physical regions within a relatively compact inland area.
The north has a more continental pattern of cold winters and hot summers, while other regions combine continental and Mediterranean influences. Snow is an important part of the mountain winter setting. Serbia's uplands therefore have a different landscape character from the fertile flatter ground farther north.
