The landscapes of Montenegro

Montenegro's mountains rise behind a narrow and deeply indented Adriatic coast. Limestone uplands, high plateaux and rugged inland ranges create strong contrasts within a relatively small country, from maritime scenery to enclosed mountain valleys.

Durmitor occupies northern inland mountain country, while the Prokletije ranges rise along the eastern border region. Lovćen and Orjen have closer relationships with the Adriatic. Limestone ridges and deeply cut river valleys connect these settings in broad geological character, but their coastal or inland surroundings make each region visually and geographically distinct.
