Three Peaks challenges in Thailand

Thailand's central plain is bordered by mountains, while the Khorat Plateau occupies much of the east. Northern uplands and the southern peninsula belong to different landscape and seasonal settings.

The landscapes of Thailand

Thailand's central plain contrasts with the Khorat Plateau to the east and mountain country elsewhere, particularly in the north. The southern peninsula adds a separate, narrow maritime landscape. These regions give the country's uplands different settings rather than one continuous national mountain belt.

Seasonal monsoon winds strongly influence rainfall, with broadly wetter southwest-monsoon conditions and a cooler, drier period across much of the north. The southern isthmus remains hot and humid. The distinction between northern mountains, central lowlands and the peninsula is therefore important geographically as well as climatically.
