Three Peaks challenges in Jordan

Jordan's western rift contains the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea, with higher country rising beside it. Arid plateaus dominate elsewhere, making its southern mountains and escarpments distinctive landscape settings.

The landscapes of Jordan

Jordan's western landscape is shaped by the deep rift containing the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea. Higher country rises beside it, while broad arid plateaux extend inland. The contrast between low basins, escarpments and uplands is central to the country's geography.

Wadi Rum occupies sandstone and granite desert country in the south, distinct from the uplands overlooking the Dead Sea. Farther north, the hills around Ajloun have another landscape character. The eastern desert extends away from these western and southern highlands, opening into a much broader and less sharply dissected plateau.
