The selected Jabal landmarks lie in Jordan's southern uplands, away from much of the country's flatter desert plateau. Their setting is connected geographically with the rugged terrain inland from Aqaba, where pronounced relief contrasts with the surrounding arid lower country.
Southern Jordan combines rocky mountain country with desert basins and the short Red Sea coastline at Aqaba. These summits belong to that southern setting, separate from the higher plateau landscapes farther north and the deep depression running through the Jordan Valley.
