Three Peaks challenges in Japan
Japan's islands are predominantly mountainous, with landscapes changing across a long north to south span. Its famous sacred mountains belong to a much broader geography of rugged interiors and varied regional climates.
The landscapes of Japan
Japan's islands contain extensive mountain interiors, with their character changing across a long north-to-south span. Hokkaido's northern landscapes, the high ranges of central Honshu and the volcanic country of Kyushu belong to distinct regional settings rather than one uniform mountain destination.
The Japanese Alps occupy central Honshu, with Tateyama in their northern ranges. Hakusan stands farther west, while Fuji rises southwest of Tokyo rather than beside either mountain. Japan's famous sacred mountain grouping thus crosses separate landscapes; a more local collection might instead remain within one part of Honshu's extensive mountain interior.
