Three Peaks challenges in India
India ranges from the Himalayan north to the Deccan Plateau and tropical south. The southern uplands offer a separate mountain setting from the far higher ranges along the country's northern edge.
The landscapes of India
India's mountain geography ranges from the Himalayas in the north to the uplands of the Deccan and the southern peninsula. Between them lie extensive plains, river basins and drier western regions, making distance and regional identity central to any mountain journey.
The Western Ghats follow the western edge of the peninsula, rising above the Arabian Sea coast. The Nilgiri hills mark a distinct southern upland setting, whereas Himalayan regions such as Uttarakhand and Sikkim belong to the northern mountain arc. Each has a different relationship with the plains, valleys and climates around it.
