Three Peaks challenges in Afghanistan
Afghanistan's mountain geography is shaped by the Hindu Kush and the high country of the Wakhan Corridor. Inland ranges divide its northern plains from central valleys and the drier landscapes farther south.
The landscapes of Afghanistan
The highest mountain country lies in the far north-east, where Wakhan reaches towards the Pamirs. Central Afghanistan has a different pattern of enclosed valleys and dry uplands. These are widely separated settings: a journey centred on the Hindu Kush would have a very different geographical focus from one exploring the lower western plains.
