Three Peaks challenges in Sudan

Sudan is largely a country of plains, with desert dominating the north. Isolated uplands and mountain areas interrupt this broad landscape, offering a different geographical setting from the Nile corridor and lower country.

The landscapes of Sudan

Northern Sudan is dominated by desert, while broad plains occupy much of the country. Isolated uplands interrupt this generally low-relief setting rather than forming a continuous mountain belt across the territory. The Nile corridor provides another distinct geographical axis through the interior.

The climate is predominantly hot and dry, although the timing and extent of rainfall vary between regions. Mountain and upland destinations therefore belong to particular landscapes within a much larger arid country. Their setting should be understood alongside the surrounding plains and desert, rather than in isolation from them.
