The selected Jabal landmarks focus on Sudan's northeastern higher terrain. Their setting contrasts with the broad desert plains and Nile corridor farther inland, providing a particular mountain region within a country whose overall landscape is largely low and arid.
These mountains belong to the Red Sea Hills, a band of rocky uplands behind Sudan's northeastern coast. The mountains separate the maritime margin from extensive inland desert country. Their landscape is distinct from the Nile's cultivated corridor, which lies much farther inland and follows a different geographical axis through northern Sudan.
