Huascarán anchors this group in the northern-central Peruvian Andes. The surrounding high ground belongs to the sierra between the Pacific coastal desert and the Amazonian east, with a landscape quite different from either of those lower regions.

Huascarán belongs to the Cordillera Blanca, while the Santa valley separates that high eastern chain from the Cordillera Negra. The selected locations extend across the wider Ancash landscape rather than remaining on Huascarán itself. High mountain relief and deeply incised valleys give this part of Peru its characteristic regional structure.
