This group belongs to southern Patagonia's border mountain country, where the Andes occupy a very different setting from northern Chile. The named summits lie near the Chile–Argentina frontier and the icefield landscape, rather than above the country's northern desert plateau.
Chile's far south is cooler and damper than the dry northern Andes and the Mediterranean-climate centre. The Patagonian peaks belong to this southern environment, where the country's narrow Pacific-facing geography meets the mountain frontier with Argentina over a very long north–south extent.
