Agulhas Negras anchors this group in Brazil's southeastern highlands, far from the low Amazon Basin. The surrounding mountain country forms part of the elevated and varied terrain along this side of the country, rather than representing Brazil's much larger lowland interior.

Southeastern Brazil's uplands are one component of a country spanning several immense drainage basins and climatic regions. The Amazon lowlands and western wetlands are geographically remote from this group. The elevated southeastern landscape gives these mountains their regional identity within Brazil's otherwise enormous variety.
