Sajama and the neighbouring selected mountains occupy a high Andean setting near Bolivia's western frontier. Their landscape belongs to the elevated plateau and volcanic mountain country, contrasting sharply with the extensive lowland plains that spread across the east of Bolivia.
Altitude creates a major division within Bolivia's climate, from humid tropical lowlands to colder and drier high country. The Sajama region belongs to the latter setting. Its volcanic mountains rise within the western Andean landscape, away from the low eastern drainage basins.
