Tatamailau and the other selected high points belong to Timor-Leste's mountainous interior. This high ground forms a substantial part of the island's physical structure, contrasting with lower coastal areas rather than standing as isolated hills above an extensive plain.

Tatamailau occupies the central-western highlands, while Diatuto lies in a separate part of the interior. Valleys divide the island's mountainous backbone into local regions. The proximity of both northern and southern coasts gives Timor's uplands a different setting from broad continental ranges, with substantial relief compressed into a relatively narrow island.
