Discover Dunedin Three Peaks

Dunedin’s Three Peaks look over a city shaped by hills, harbour and the surrounding Otago landscape. Flagstaff, Swampy Summit and Mount Cargill form the trio associated with the local mountain race. They offer a compact regional identity: all three belong to the uplands around Dunedin, yet each provides a different perspective on the city’s setting and the country beyond it.

Flagstaff is linked with the open landscape of the western hills; Swampy Summit lies farther north along the uplands; and Mount Cargill is a familiar presence above northern Dunedin. A visit can make room for the city and Otago Peninsula as well as the peaks themselves. Tell us whether the appeal is a focused three-summit challenge or a broader Dunedin stay, so the mountain days can fit naturally into your time in the region.

The mountains

The three summits

  1. Flagstaff / Te Whanaupaki

Flagstaff stands in the hills west of Dunedin. It is the southernmost of this three-peak group.

  2. Swampy Summit / Whāwhāraupō

Swampy Summit lies north of Flagstaff in the uplands above Dunedin. It forms the middle objective in the city’s Three Peaks mountain race.

  3. Mount Cargill / Kapuketaumahaka
