Pic la Selle places this group in Haiti's southern mountain country. The other named high points occupy different positions within the wider uplands, whose rugged relief contrasts with the narrow coastal plains and valleys of the western part of Hispaniola.

Hispaniola's mountains shape local climate as well as the skyline. Where ridges interrupt the trade winds, neighbouring districts can have markedly different rainfall; the southern highlands therefore belong to a more varied landscape than a simple description of a tropical island suggests.
