Three Peaks challenges in Spain

Spain combines an elevated interior plateau with surrounding ranges and distinct island landscapes. The Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada and Tenerife each offer a different geographical interpretation of a Three Peaks journey.

The landscapes of Spain

Much of mainland Spain is an elevated plateau, surrounded and divided by rugged ranges. The Pyrenees mark a northern mountain region, while other uplands occupy different parts of the interior and south. The Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts provide lower and more maritime settings around this high central country.

The interior generally has greater seasonal temperature contrasts than the coast. Spain's islands add separate landscapes, including Tenerife's volcanic terrain, which should not be treated as part of a mainland mountain chain. The country's mountain destinations therefore span several distinct geographical settings rather than one continuous range.
