Three Peaks challenges in Slovenia
Slovenia combines alpine country, karst landscapes and a short Adriatic coastline. Its northern mountains form one part of a compact geography where valleys, plateaus and rivers create strong regional variety.
The landscapes of Slovenia
Slovenia's northern alpine region adjoins Italy and Austria, while mixed mountain and valley landscapes continue towards the east. In the southwest, karst terrain meets a short Adriatic coast. These neighbouring environments give the country considerable physical variety within a relatively small area.
Mediterranean influences are strongest near the coast, whereas eastern plateaus and valleys have a more continental climate. The northern mountains form another distinct setting. Rivers and valleys connect these regions, but the alpine, karst and maritime landscapes retain recognisably different geographical characters.
