Drei Schwestern and the other selected high points belong to Liechtenstein's rugged Alpine side. Their setting contrasts with the much lower Rhine Valley along the country's western edge, concentrating a substantial change in relief within a very small inland territory.
The Rhine Valley occupies Liechtenstein's western side while Alpine ridges rise towards Austria. This sharp change in elevation creates local climatic differences within a small country; the three summits belong to the mountain side of that contrast rather than the settled valley floor.
