The selected peaks belong to the southern mountain margin of Turkmenistan near Iran. Their relief contrasts with the country's much more extensive sandy deserts, providing a frontier upland setting rather than a continuous range across the whole nation.
The Kopet Dag forms a pronounced mountain boundary along southern Turkmenistan. These uplands rise behind the lower country around Ashgabat, with the Karakum occupying a much broader area inland. The contrast between a concentrated southern mountain belt and extensive desert plains gives this grouping its specific geographical character.
