Three Peaks challenges in Tajikistan
Tajikistan's mountains include the Alay in the north and the Pamirs in the southeast. Valleys and enclosed basins separate these high regions, giving the country a predominantly upland geographical character.
The landscapes of Tajikistan
The Alay Mountains dominate northern Tajikistan, while the Pamirs occupy much of the southeast. Lower valleys provide important contrasts: the western Fergana Valley lies in the north, and the Kofarnikhon and Vakhsh valleys open through the southwest. These spaces divide and frame the higher country.
The climate varies substantially with elevation, from warmer continental valley settings to much colder high mountain environments. Tajikistan is consequently a country of distinct mountain regions and intervening valleys, rather than a single uniform upland plateau. The scale of that relief is central to its geographical identity.
