Three Peaks challenges in South Korea
South Korea is predominantly a country of hills and mountains, with broader coastal plains in the west and south. Its mainland ranges and Jeju's volcanic high ground provide different settings for mountain journeys.
The landscapes of South Korea
Hills and mountains occupy much of South Korea, while broader coastal plains lie mainly in the west and south. The mainland's uplands are therefore a dominant part of its physical geography, with lower river and coastal landscapes providing important breaks in the relief.
Cold winters and wetter summers form part of the temperate climate. Jeju adds a separate volcanic island setting beyond the mainland ranges. This distinction between mainland mountain country, coastal plains and island high ground gives Korean mountain destinations different regional identities within a comparatively compact country.
