Three Peaks challenges in Mongolia
Mongolia's inland geography combines mountain systems with broad dry plateaus and desert country. Its western and northern highlands contrast with the Gobi landscapes and the open spaces of the interior.
The landscapes of Mongolia
Mongolia combines immense steppe and dry plateaux with mountain systems in the west and north. The Gobi occupies a different southern setting, so the country's open landscapes do not all belong to the same physical environment.
The Altai occupies western Mongolia, with Khüiten Peak near the country's far western corner. The Khangai lies farther inland, while the Khentii uplands occupy northeastern country. Broad basins, steppe and the southern Gobi separate these mountain settings, giving Mongolia's uplands a strong sense of distance and regional identity across the interior.
