Three Peaks challenges in Malaysia
Malaysia is divided between the Malay Peninsula and northern Borneo. Sabah's mountain interior belongs to a different geographical setting from the peninsula, despite both sharing a tropical maritime context.
The landscapes of Malaysia
Malaysia's mountain geography is divided between the Malay Peninsula and northern Borneo. Both rise from coastal lowlands into hills and mountains, but they are separated by sea and belong to distinct regional landscapes rather than one connected highland system.
The Titiwangsa Range forms much of the peninsula's mountainous interior. Across the South China Sea, Kinabalu rises in Sabah, while Sarawak's uplands occupy another part of Borneo. These are not neighbouring summit groups: the peninsula and Bornean states each contain landscapes that need to be understood within their own regional setting.
