Three Peaks challenges in Iran
Iran's high interior basin is edged and crossed by rugged mountain systems. Its uplands contrast with central deserts and the narrower coastal plains beside the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf.
The landscapes of Iran
Iran's mountain systems surround and cross an elevated interior of basins and deserts. The Alborz mountains near the Caspian Sea and the long Zagros ranges farther west and south give the country two very different mountain settings.
The Alborz separates the Caspian coastal region from the interior, with Damavand standing east of Tehran. The Zagros extends across western Iran in long folds of ridges and valleys. Central basins such as the Dasht-e Kavir occupy a contrasting dry landscape between the country's surrounding mountain systems and upland margins.
