Three Peaks challenges in Indonesia

Indonesia's larger islands contain mountain interiors above coastal lowlands. The archipelago's immense spread means a journey in Papua belongs to a very different geographical setting from one on Java or Sumatra.

The landscapes of Indonesia

Indonesia's mountains are distributed across an enormous archipelago. Many larger islands rise from coastal lowlands into rugged interiors, but a journey on Java, Sumatra or Papua belongs to a different regional landscape rather than one continuous national mountain system.

Java's volcanic chain extends along an island bordered by low coastal country. Sumatra's Barisan mountains run along its western side, while Papua's interior highlands belong to a much larger and different mountain landscape. Even familiar summit names can be separated by several islands, making their individual island settings essential to understanding Indonesia.
