Brunei's coastal lowlands give way to hillier ground inland on Borneo. The three selected Bukit landmarks focus on that interior relief, in a tropical setting whose high points are modest compared with the larger mountain systems elsewhere on the island.

Brunei is divided into two parts by Malaysian territory, with Temburong forming the separate eastern section. Its tropical climate is hot, humid and rainy. The country's inland relief sits within Borneo's larger physical landscape, while its lower northern edge faces the South China Sea.
