Three Peaks challenges in Tunisia
Tunisia's northern mountains give way to central plains and the Sahara farther south. Its uplands belong to a Mediterranean-facing landscape that contrasts strongly with the drier interior and southern desert.
The landscapes of Tunisia
Northern Tunisia contains the country's principal mountain terrain, while a hot central plain gives way to more arid landscapes farther south. The Sahara extends into the southern part of the country, creating a marked contrast with the Mediterranean-facing north. These regions are different physical settings.
Northern winters are generally milder and wetter, with hot, dry summers; desert conditions become more dominant to the south. Tunisia's uplands therefore belong to a particular end of this geographical transition. Their surrounding plains and Mediterranean position are important parts of the mountain landscape's character.
