Three Peaks challenges in South Sudan

South Sudan's plains and the great wetland of the Sudd contrast with southern highlands. Its mountain country lies toward the borders with Uganda and Kenya, apart from the broad White Nile landscape.

The landscapes of South Sudan

The White Nile and the extensive Sudd wetland dominate much of South Sudan's central geography. Plains occupy the north and centre, while higher country rises towards the southern borders with Uganda and Kenya. These uplands contrast strongly with the broad river and wetland landscape below.

Rainfall is generally greater in the southern uplands and decreases towards the north, within a hot climate influenced by seasonal shifts in tropical weather systems. The mountain country is consequently concentrated in a particular part of the nation rather than spread evenly across the plains.
