Three Peaks challenges in Somalia
Somalia's generally undulating plateau rises into hills and mountains in the north. Its northern highlands form a contrasting landscape to the lower, drier country elsewhere on the Horn of Africa.
The landscapes of Somalia
Much of Somalia consists of flat or gently undulating plateau, with higher hills and mountains towards the north. This northern relief forms a distinct part of the Horn of Africa, contrasting with the lower and generally drier landscapes that extend across much of the country.
The climate is predominantly arid, and monsoon winds influence seasonal conditions. Rainfall is irregular, with differences between the north and south. The northern mountain country should therefore be understood in relation to its plateau and coastal surroundings, rather than as representative of every Somali landscape.
