Three Peaks challenges in Mali
Mali spans southern savanna, the semiarid Sahel and the Sahara farther north. Isolated hills and uplands punctuate this broad inland landscape, rather than forming one continuous mountain corridor.
The landscapes of Mali
Mali extends from southern savanna through the Sahel into the Sahara. Across that broad inland span, isolated hills, escarpments and rugged uplands interrupt more extensive plains, creating distinct landscape regions rather than one continuous mountain chain.
Hombori's sandstone landforms rise in central Mali, while the Adrar des Ifoghas occupies a northeastern Saharan setting. Farther southwest, the Manding hills belong to another upland region. Between them, extensive plains and the Niger's inland delta create a very different scale of landscape from the country's isolated rocky high ground.
