Three Peaks challenges in Malawi

Malawi's landscape is strongly shaped by its long lake and surrounding uplands. Southern mountain groups offer a contrasting setting to the lakeshore, with higher ground rising above the broader lowland scenery.

The landscapes of Malawi

Malawi's long lake is its most conspicuous geographical feature, but surrounding uplands give the country a much more varied landscape. Plateaux, rolling hills and distinct mountain groups create strong contrasts with the lower lakeshore country.

Mulanje forms an isolated massif in southern Malawi, with Sapitwa on its high plateau. Zomba is a separate southern upland, while the Nyika Plateau occupies the north. Lake Malawi extends between much of the eastern border country and the western highlands, giving these separated mountain regions very different relationships with the lake.
