Three Peaks challenges in Libya
Libya is overwhelmingly desert and semidesert, but its landscape is not uniform. Coastal areas, inland plateaus and isolated mountain country create very different settings across the country's large Saharan interior.
The landscapes of Libya
Libya is predominantly desert and semidesert, but its vast interior is not a uniform plain. Plateaux, depressions, isolated high ground and mountain regions interrupt the Sahara, while the Mediterranean margin has a separate coastal setting.
The Jabal Akhdar overlooks northeastern coastal country, while the Nafusa Mountains rise inland from the northwest. Far to the south, the Tibesti border region belongs to a different Saharan setting. Libya's northern uplands and remote desert mountains are widely separated, with extensive plains and basins occupying much of the country between them.
