The selected peaks focus on Nicaragua's northern interior, distinct from the country's western volcanic chain and broad eastern lowlands. Hills and mountain terrain give this region its identity within a country that contains several very different geographical zones.
The northern highlands offer a different Nicaraguan landscape from the lakes and volcanic cones associated with the Pacific side. Around Madriz, named hills and intervening valleys provide the focus, within a broader interior that rises between the country's two very different coastal regions.
