Pico San Juan and the other named elevations focus on central Cuba's uplands. This is a distinct mountain setting within a long island whose terrain also includes extensive rolling plains, and it should not be confused with the separate Sierra Maestra farther east.
Trade winds influence Cuba's tropical climate, which has broadly wetter summer months and a drier winter period. Central mountain country interrupts the island's extensive plains, providing a separate upland identity within the Greater Antilles rather than one end of a continuous Cuban mountain chain.
