Moldoveanu and the Piatra Craiului high point occupy different mountain blocks in Romania's Southern Carpathians. The selected group therefore crosses a regional landscape of ranges and valleys, rather than following one uninterrupted ridge above the Transylvanian and Wallachian lower country.
The Făgăraș mountains contain Moldoveanu, while Piatra Craiului forms a separate limestone ridge. That contrast gives the grouping two recognisable mountain settings within the Southern Carpathians. Valleys and intervening uplands divide the ranges, so their shared regional identity does not imply that all three locations lie on one continuous crest.
