Hvannadalshnúkur anchors this group in southeastern Iceland, with the other named summits nearby. This is a particular part of the island's rugged volcanic landscape, distinct from the interior plateaus and the lower plains along other stretches of the coast.

Icefields, volcanic uplands and coastal lowlands meet in this part of Iceland. Hvannadalshnúkur belongs to the Vatnajökull area, but the selected mountains are separate objectives across the southern highlands; their maritime setting brings wind and moisture despite the island's northerly latitude.
