Discover Heves County
Kékes and Galya-tető place much of this group in the Mátra landscape, with Szanda farther west. These are local uplands above Hungary's more extensive plains, offering a different scale and setting from the higher Carpathian ranges beyond the national borders.
The Mátra contains Hungary's highest ground, including Kékes, while Szanda extends the selection into a separate western hill setting. Beyond these northern uplands, the Danube and Tisza organise the country's much broader lowland landscape into three major geographical regions.
