Zugspitze and the other selected summits belong to Germany's far southern Alpine landscape. Their setting is quite different from the central uplands and northern plains, with high mountain relief concentrated along the border region adjoining Austria.
The Bavarian Alps form Germany's highest ground, but this selection reaches across more than one Alpine group. Zugspitze and Hinterreintalsschrofen sit in the Wetterstein landscape; Großer Seekopf brings in the Allgäu mountains, making the journey a comparison between separate ranges.
