Dinara places this group in Croatia's rugged border mountain country, away from the broad plains of the northeast. The selected high points belong to the inland Dinaric landscape, with a different setting from the country's indented Adriatic coast and islands.

Croatia combines continental inland conditions with a Mediterranean coastal climate. Dinara's border country lies between the wider inland uplands and the Adriatic-facing side of the Dinaric system. The surrounding relief is distinct from both the northeastern plains and the many low offshore islands.
